Indoor Air Quality

February 9, 2017 By Aucella

shutterstock_156648308Have you ever wondered what the the V stands for in HVAC?  Ventilation!  Winter is the perfect time of year to talk about ventilation since it plays an extremely important role in your home’s indoor air quality.

All homes need air exchange in order to maintain healthy indoor air quality.  Stale air in the home must be replaced with clean air on a regular basis.

If you live in a old leaky New Englander, you are probably getting more than enough air exchange.   Air quality problems are usually found in well insulated, newer homes that are occupied by families who cook meals at home and run multiple showers a day.  If the home is not getting proper air exchange to remove odors from cooking and humidity from showers and laundry, poor indoor air quality will result.

If you think your home could benefit from bringing in fresh air, and you don’t want to open the windows during a February blizzard, you might consider having an Energy Recovery Ventilator ERV or Heat Recovery Ventilator HRV installed.  These systems will efficiently warm up fresh air before bringing it into the home using a method of heat exchange with the exhausted warm air.

We install both types of systems and can help you chose the best option to fit your needs.

Have a healthy, happy February!

From all of us here at Aucella Heating and Cooling

Solar Hot Water in New England

February 2, 2017 By Aucella

solar thermal heat imaging

It’s February and we are still getting plenty of hot water from our solar hot water system!  When it comes solar hot water, sun=hot water.  It doesn’t matter if it’s cold outside, when the sun is shining the hot water is flowing.  I like to take advantage of these sunny winter days and throw a couple of extra loads of laundry in.

Even though we recommend a back up system for reliability and comfort, it’s kind of fun to strategically plan our hot water usage to maximize our energy savings.

Have you considered a solar hot water system?

Did you know they work in our cold New England climate?

According to the EPA, “Solar hot water can be a cost-effective way to manage domestic hot water expenses – especially if water is heated by electricity and there are teenagers in the house! Typically, they can produce 65-85 percent of domestic hot water needs with just the power of the sun.” (2016)

house with solar thermal Our historic home was oriented with the roof sides facing East and West, so we decided to install our solar panels above the front door.  We may move them to a less conspicuous place in the future, but for now, they are front and center!

A word about Heat Pumps

April 16, 2015 By Fay Aucella

A Word About Heat Pumps…

Heat pumps are different than geothermal heating in a few of important ways. Mainly, they are much less expensive to install, you don’t need to drill a well to run a heat pump, and the installation process is much shorter, and a lot less messy.

Heat pumps can be used for heating and cooling.   They also control the environment by decreasing humidity during the summer, keeping allergens at bay by filtering dust, and other particles, and preventing condensation indoors during the winter.  They run clean, with no fumes, open flames, ash or combustibles.

Heat pumps are extremely eco-friendly. They use a small amount of electricity  so efficiently that the operating costs to heat and/or cool your home will likely be cut in half! (compared to conventional methods like gas, oil, or electric). This can save you BIG over the long run.

The heat pump is so efficient and reliable that many local utility companies including Eversource, Unitil, Liberties, and the NH Co-op offer substantial energy rebates to homeowners when they have a heat pump professionally installed. Efficiency Maine also offers rebates on heat pumps. We would be happy to guide you through the rebate process!

If you have any questions or would like to schedule a home visit to see if the heat pump is the best option for you, give Aucella a call. 866-926-6888

Be Green This Spring!

March 9, 2015 By Fay Aucella

heating contractor strafford nh be green

Tips to Save Energy

  • Change or clean your AC’s air filters at least once a month to keep your unit running at top performance.
  • Schedule your AC for a tune-up. Running inefficient AC systems can result in higher monthly bills. You may also qualify for a rebate.
  • Use injected foam insulation to insulate your walls. It helps save energy by keeping the hot outside air from seeping through walls.
  • Inspect openings like fireplace dampers, doors and windows to make sure air isn’t passing through.

You can save money and energy by scheduling an AC maintenance this spring!
According to energy.gov:
“An air conditioner’s filters, coils, and fins require regular maintenance for the unit to function effectively and efficiently throughout its years of service. Neglecting necessary maintenance ensures a steady decline in air conditioning performance while energy use steadily increases.”  (energy.gov)

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR YOU?
*Regular maintenance keeps your air conditioner running as efficiently as possible.
*Maintaining your air conditioner will save you money by extending the unit’s life. (energy.gov)

Give us a call today to schedule your AC maintenance (866)-926-6888
